David C. Markel, MD is a reconstructive knee and hip specialist with a keen interest in advancing orthopaedic scholarship and research. He graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School where he also completed his internship and residency in Orthopaedic Surgery. During residency, he was granted an AO/ASIF Foundation International Trauma Fellowship in Germany. Thereafter, Dr. Markel completed his training as a hip and knee fellow and Junior Attending Surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery, Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. He has been with the Porretta Center for Orthopaedic Surgery since 1994.

David C. Markel, MD, has distinguished himself with leadership positions in state, regional and national capacities. He is a member of the Board of Counselors and former Leadership Fellow for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, a Member of the Board and past Chairman of the Education Committee for the Mid-America Orthopaedic Association, Past- President and current Board Member and 2nd Vice President for the Michigan Orthopaedic Society and is an Examiner for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He serves as Chair of the DMC / Providence Orthopaedic Surgery Residency and directs their research efforts in the new Orthopaedic molecular biology laboratory at Providence Hospital. He maintains additional titles of Associate Clinical Professor, Wayne State University and Adjunct Clinical Professor, American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine. Dr. Markel has authored numerous publications on hip and knee arthroplasty and their basic science, book chapters, received national research funding, and regularly lectures at a National and International level.
