Sean F. Bak, MD
Board-Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon
Sean F. Bak, MD, a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, specializes in shoulder, elbow, knee, and sports medicine. He graduated with Alpha Omega Alpha honors from Wayne State University Medical School and completed his residency and internship at Michigan State University. He then went to New York City where he completed the prestigious Charles S. Neer Fellowship in Shoulder, Elbow, and Sports Medicine at Columbia University. Prior to joining the Porretta Center, Dr. Bak was a member of the orthopaedic surgery staff at Beaumont Hospital.
As a former collegiate baseball player, Dr. Bak understands the physical demands of athletics and takes care of a wide range of athletes from the professional and collegiate ranks to weekend warriors. He currently cares for athletes of Novi High School and Madonna University. In the past he has served as team physician for various athletic teams including: Oakland University, Michigan Bucks Soccer Club, Columbia University, Western Michigan University Varsity Football and was a staff physician at the 2007 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
Dr. Bak was recently awarded subspecialty certification in Sports Medicine by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, a distinction held by only a small number of surgeons in Metro Detroit. Furthermore, he is one of only several surgeons in the state to have specialized fellowship training in reconstructive shoulder surgery. He was also voted as one of Hour Detroit’s Top Docs in 2010. Dr. Bak recently served as president of the Detroit Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has taught surgical techniques to other orthopaedic surgeons at national courses and is a regional consultant for complex shoulder problems. He is a peer reviewer for new research for the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons as well as Orthopedics. He has published numerous book chapters and research articles in the area of shoulder reconstruction.
